John A. Mecenas, MD was born and raised in Ithaca, NY. He earned his undergraduate degree in English Literature at Wesleyan University and then entered the Mount Sinai School of Medicine through the Humanities and Medicine Program, graduating in 1996. He completed his internship and residency in general surgery at North Shore University Hospital on Long Island, NY. During his residency, Dr. Mecenas trained at Yale University, gaining additional experience in advanced laparoscopy before completing his fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at the NYU School of Medicine/Tisch Hospital.

Dr. Mecenas joined Surgical Associates in 2002, bringing a renewed interest in using minimally-invasive/laparoscopic surgery to treat a wide range of disease. Among the problems he treats are diseases of the esophagus, stomach, and gallbladder; colon (including cancer); hernias, and solid organs, such as the spleen.

Dr. Mecenas founded the Bariatric (Weight-loss) Surgery Program at Cayuga Medical Center in 2002 and introduced laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy to the area. He is the director of Bariatric Surgery at Cayuga Medical Center and leads a multidisciplinary team of health-care professionals specializing in the care of weight-loss surgery patients.

Dr. Mecenas is board certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Society for American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
